How much should seniors walk a day at 65?

Quick answer

About 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, at a brisk pace. That is the CDC's own example of the 150 minutes a week it asks of adults 65 and over. Spread over all 7 days it is about 21 min a day. At 3 mph, 30 minutes is about 3,420 steps.

What the sources say

  • Adults 65 and over need at least 150 minutes a week at moderate intensity, for example 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. They also need at least 2 days of activities that strengthen muscles, and activities to improve balance.

CDC, Older Adult Activity: An Overview

  • Walking briskly, 2.5 mph or faster, is one of the CDC's examples of moderate activity. As a rule of thumb, at that level you can talk, but not sing.

CDC, How to Measure Physical Activity Intensity

  • Even small amounts of activity through the day count toward the 150 minutes.

  • If you have trouble meeting these recommendations, be as physically active as your abilities and conditions allow. Some activity is better than none.

How we work it out

What to do with it

  • Pick the split that fits your week. Each row above adds up to the same 150 minutes.
  • Use the talk test rather than a watch. If you can talk but not sing, the pace is moderate.
  • Add the other two parts: 2 days of strength work, and balance, which the CDC says can be walking heel to toe or standing up from sitting.
