Side step: how to do it
In short
A small step to the side, then the other foot follows. It keeps your walking from always going the same way. Works: balance, hips and walking.

How to do it
- Stand facing a counter, with both hands resting on it. Or face a wall, hands flat on it, and slide your hands along as you step. Feet together, knees soft.
- Breathe out and step your right foot a short way to the right.
- Shift your weight onto it, then bring your left foot in beside it.
- Take 4 steps to the right, then 4 steps back to the left.
- Rest for a few breaths, then repeat.
As you go
- Keep your toes pointing forward.
- Take small steps, about the width of your hand.
- Breathe out on each step. Keep breathing.
What it works
- Works
- balance, hips and walking
- Position
- Standing, with a hand on a support
- Have nearby
- a counter
- Effort
- Moderate
An easier and a harder version
Easier
Take 2 steps each way, with a short rest after each.
Harder
Take 6 steps each way. Keep your hands on the counter.
Take care
- Balance: keep at least one hand on the counter and move along a clear surface. Do not cross your feet.
- Sensitive hips and knees: keep the steps small.

The rule of thumb: at moderate intensity you can talk, but not sing.
